Six million Jewish people were murdered during Nazi |
| |
rule in Europe; five million other victims: Gypsies, |
| |
disabled people, homosexuals, Slavs, Poles, |
| |
Jehovah Witnesses, Bolsheviks and political prisoners |
| |
were also victims of the Nazis and their collaborators. |

Stephen and James Smith and their mother,
| |
Marina, discovered the extent of the persecution that |
| |
had happened during the Holocaust when they were |
| |
on a visit to Yad Vashem, Jerusalem. They realised |
that there was not a single memorial in the UK to |
| |
commemorate the Holocaust. They felt there were |
| |
important lessons to be learnt from the Holocaust |
| |
which can be applied in our treatment of people who |
| |
are marginalised and excluded in our society. They |
| |
set an example of responsibility and initiative. |
| |
They created the Holocaust Centre in 1995. |
